😮 THE MOAB is here

26 Billion Records Leaked - What Should We Do?

GM, this is Breach or Treat. We help you get smarter about cybersecurity with some broken English in less than 5 minutes a day.

What a sweet coincidence to open our first newsletter with the biggest data breach in history - THE MOAB.

Today’s newsletter is short but super important.

Let’s see what’s happened and how we can deal with it:

😮 26 Billion Records Leaked in the MOAB

Usually, we don’t panic when it comes to 95% of the data breaches. ā€œNah, we shouldn't be worried about thatā€ is a typical response.

But this time, it’s different.

A few days ago, researchers found a giant leak of 26 billion records. And it’s probably the largest data breach in history.

They called it ā€œthe mother of all breaches.ā€

The data was stolen from sites like LinkedIn, Snapchat, Venmo, Adobe, and X.

We are talking about billions of records.

If you ask us, there’s more than enough probability that some of your data may be there.

But before we jump into what you should do, here is a quick explanation for the ETAL.

Explanation For the ETAL (embarrassed-to-ask-learner):

A data breach is an incident where information is stolen from a system without the authorization of the system's owner.

It basically means that someone, usually with nothing but ā€œgood intentions,ā€ owns data that could be yours.

Here’s how to make sure you’re safe:

First, update your passwords on the platforms we mentioned above and turn on 2-factor authentication.

Then go to haveibeenpwned.com and check if you have been… you know, pwned.

You can search Google for more practices but that’s the main ones for this specific breach.

Btw, If you’re a business, here’s a great resource about 12 best practices to prevent data breaches in your organization.

Meme of the day

Some researchers are not worried about the recent breach 🤣

Ok, so that’s for today: Short, practical, and sweet.

We’ll be back on Sunday with more news, takeaways, and snacks ;)

Yours truly 😘
